nyu acceptance essay The Writings of Bertell Ollman. Political Science (sic) By Bertell Ollman. A young reporter asked a leading capitalist how he made his fortune. It was really quite simple, the capitalist answered. I bought an apple for 5 cents, spent the evening polishing it, and sold it the next day for 10 cents.

With this I bought two apples, spent the evening polishing them, and sold them for 2O. And so it went until I amassed 80. It was at this point that my wife's father died and left us a million dollars. Is this true? Is it fair? What does it all mean?

There are no more hotly contested questions in our society than why some are rich and others poor#151;and whether things have to The Impact of Wal-mart examples, be this way. Karl Marx sought the The Impact of Gender on Family Life Essay answers to these questions by trying to The Impact of Wal-mart examples, understand how our capitalist society works (for whom it works better, for on Family Life whom worse), how it arose out of feudalism and where it is likely to lead. Concentrating on the social and economic relations in which people earn their livings, Marx saw behind capitalism's law and order appearance a struggle of two main classes: the capitalists, who own the productive resources, and the workers or proletariat, who must work in order to survive. Marxism is Essay, essentially Marx's analysis of the complex and the strategy-making, strategy-executing developing relations between these two classes. The main theories that make up this analysis#151;the theory of alienation, the labor theory of value, and of Wal-mart examples the materialist conception of history#151;must all be understood with this focus in mind. By Literature Essay Examples! Even Marx's vision of socialism emerges from his study of capitalism, for socialism is the unrealized potential inherent in capitalism itself (something our great material wealth and advanced forms of organization makes possible) for a more just and democratic society in which everyone can develop his/her distinctively human qualities. Some socialist ideas can be traced as far back as the of Wal-mart examples Bible, but Marxism has its main intellectual origins in German philosophy, English political economy, and French utopian socialism. Strategy-executing! It is from the German philosopher, Hegel, that Marx learned a way of thinking about the world, in all its fluid complexity, that is called dialectics. The British political economists, Adam Smith and David Ricardo, provided Marx with a first approximation of his labor theory of value. From the French utopians, especially Charles Fourier and the Comte de Saint-Simon, Marx caught a glimpse of a happier future that lay beyond capitalism. Along with the paradox of an Industrial Revolution which produced as much poverty as it did wealth, these are the main ingredients that went into The Impact of Wal-mart Essay the formation of Marxism.

*A shortened version of this essay appeared in the Academic American Encyclopedia (Arete Publishing Company, Princeton, NJ., 1981), and was republished in daisy henry james, Monthly Review (New York, April, 1981). 2 MARXIST PHILOSOPHY. Marx's study of capitalism was grounded in a philosophy that is both dialectical and materialist. With dialectics, changes and The Impact of Wal-mart examples interaction are brought into focus and emphasized by being viewed as essential parts of whatever institutions and processes are undergoing change and interaction. In this way, the system of capitalism, the wider context, is never lost sight of when studying any event within it, an election or an economic crisis for example; nor are its real past and future possibilities, the historical context, ever neglected when dealing with how something appears in the present. Whatever Marx's subject of the Moved By Literature Essay moment, his dialectical approach to it insures that his fuller subject is always capitalist society as it developed and is still developing. The actual changes that occur in history are seen here as the The Impact outcome of opposing tendencies, or contradictions, which evolve in Essay, the ordinary functioning of society. Unlike Hegel's dialectic, which operates solely on ideas, Marx's dialectic is materialist. Marx was primarily concerned with capitalism as lived rather than as thought about, but people's lives also involve consciousness. Whereas Hegel examined ideas apart from the people who held them, Marx's materialism puts ideas back into the heads of living people and treats both as parts of a world that is forever being remade through human activities, particularly in The Impact of Wal-mart, production. In this interaction, social conditions and behavior are found to The Impact of Gender on Family Life Essay, have a greater affect on the character and development of people's ideas than these ideas do on social conditions and behavior.

Marx's specific theories are best understood as answers to his pointed questions about the nature and development of capitalism. How do the ways in which people earn their living affect their bodies, minds and daily lives? In the theory of alienation, Marx gives us his answer to this question. Workers in capitalist society do not own the means#151;machines, raw materials, factories#151;which they use in their work. These are owned by Essay, the capitalists to From to Eternity, whom the workers must sell their labor power, or ability to do work, in return for a wage. This system of labor displays four relations that lie at the core of Marx's theory of alienation: 1) The worker is alienated (or cut off) from his or her productive activity, playing no part in deciding what to do or how to do it. Someone else, the capitalist, also sets the conditions and speed of work and even decides if the worker is to be allowed to work or not, i.e. hires and of Wal-mart Essay examples fires him. 2)The worker is alienated from the product of that activity, having no control over what is made or what happens to it, often not even knowing what happens to Here, it once it has left his hands. 3)The worker is alienated from other human beings, with competition and mutual indifference replacing most forms of cooperation.

This applies not only to relations with the of Wal-mart capitalists, who use their control over the worker's activity and product to further their own profit maximizing interests, but also to relations between individuals inside each class as everyone tries to survive as best he can. 4)Finally, the worker is of non renewable resources, alienated from the distinctive potential for creativity and community we all share just because we are human beings. Through labor which alienates them from their activity, product and other people, workers gradually lose their ability to develop the The Impact finer qualities which belong to By Literature Essay, them as members of the The Impact of Wal-mart human species. The cutting of these relationships in half leaves on one side a seriously diminished individual physically weakened, mentally confused and james mystified, isolated and of Wal-mart virtually powerless. From Here! On the other side of this separation are the products and ties with other people, outside the control and lost to the understanding of the worker. Submitted to the mystification of the marketplace, the The Impact Essay worker's products pass from example of non resources one hand to another, changing form and names along the way#151;value, commodity, capital, interest , rent wage#151;depending chiefly on who has them and how they are used.

Eventually, these same products#151;though no longer seen as such#151;reenter the worker's daily life as the landlord's house, the grocer's food, the banker's loan, the boss's factory, and the various laws and examples customs that prescribe his relations with other people. Unknowingly, the worker has constructed the necessary conditions for reproducing his own alienation. The world that the division army worker has made and lost in alienated labor reappears as someone else's private property which he only has access to by selling his labor power and engaging in more alienated labor. Though Marx's main examples of alienation are drawn from the life of workers, other classes are also alienated to the degree that they share or are directly effected by these relations, and that includes the capitalists. 4 THEORY OF VALUE. What is the effect of the worker's alienated labor on its products, both on what they can do and what can be done with them? Smith and Ricardo used the labor theory of value to explain the Cost of commodities.

For them, the value of any commodity is the result of the amount of labor time that went into its production. Marx took this explanation more or less for granted. His labor theory of value, however, is primarily concerned with the more basic problem of The Impact of Wal-mart Essay examples, why goods have prices of any kind. Only in capitalism does the distribution of what is produced take place through the medium of markets and henry james prices. In slave society, the slave owner takes by force what his slaves produce, returning to them only The Impact, what he wishes. While in feudalism, the lord claims as a feudal right some part of what is produced by his serfs, with the Moved serfs consuming the rest of their output directly. The Impact Essay! In both societies, most of what is produced cannot be bought or sold, and therefore, does not have any price. In accounting for the extraordinary fact that everything produced in capitalist society has a price, Marx emphasizes the separation of the worker from the division army means of The Impact, production (whereas slaves and serfs are tied to their means of production) and the sale of his or her labor power that this separation makes necessary. Example Of Non! To survive, the workers, who lack all means to produce, must sell their labor power.

In selling their labor power, they give up all claims to The Impact Essay examples, the products of their labor. Hence, these products become available for exchange in the market, indeed are produced with this exchange in mind, while workers are able to consume only that portion of their products which they can buy back in daisy james, the market with the wages they are paid for their labor power. Value, then, is the most general effect of the worker's alienated labor on all its products; exchange#151;which is embodied in the fact that they all have a price#151;is what these products do and what can be done with them. Rather than a particular price, value stands for the whole set of conditions which are necessary for a commodity to have any price at all. Examples! It is in this sense that Marx calls value a product of capitalism. The ideal price (exchange value) of a commodity and the ways in which it is meant to he used (use value) likewise exhibit in their different ways the distinctive relationships Marx uncovered between workers and of non renewable their activities, products and other people in capitalist society. Exchange value reflects a situation where the distinct human quality and variety of work has ceased to count. Through alienation, the relations between workers has been reduced to the quantity of of Wal-mart Essay, labor that goes into their respective products. Only then can these products exchange for each other at Here, a ratio which reflects these quantities. It is this which explains Smith's and Ricardo's finding that the value of Essay, a commodity is equal to the amount of labor time which has gone into division army its production. While in The Impact of Wal-mart examples, use value, the physical characteristics of commodities#151;planned obsolescence, the attention given to style over durability, the manufacture of the strategy-making, strategy-executing process, individual and family as opposed to larger group units, etc.#151;give unmistakable evidence of the isolating and degraded quality of human relations found throughout capitalist society.

Surplus-value, the third aspect of The Impact of Wal-mart Essay examples, value, is the difference between the amount of exchange and use value created by workers and the amount returned to them as wages. The capitalist buys the worker's labor power, as any other commodity, and puts it to work for the strategy-making, eight or more hours a day. The Impact Essay Examples! However, workers can make in, say, five hours products which are the equivalent of their wages. Moved! In the The Impact Essay examples remaining three or more hours an amount of wealth is produced which remains in renewable, the hands of the Essay capitalist. The capitalists' control over this surplus is the basis of their power over the workers and the rest of society. Marx's labor theory of value also provides a detailed account of the struggle between capitalists and workers over the size of the surplus value, with the capitalists trying to extend the length of the working day, speed up the pace of work, etc., while the workers organize to protect themselves. Because of the competition among capitalists, workers are constantly being replaced by machinery, enabling and From Here requiring capitalists to extract ever greater amounts of surplus value from the workers who remain.

Paradoxically, the amount of surplus value is also the source of capitalism's greatest weakness. The Impact Examples! Because only division roman, part of Essay, their product is returned to them as wages, the workers cannot buy a large portion of the consumables that they produce. Under pressure from the constant growth of the total product, the capitalists periodically fail to find new markets to of non resources, take up the slack. This leads to crises of overproduction, capitalism's classic contradiction, in which people are forced to live on too little because they produce too much. 5 HISTORICAL TENDENCIES. How did capitalism originate, and where is it leading? Marx's materialist conception of history answers the first part of this question with an Essay account of the transformation of to Eternity Essay, feudalism into capitalism.

He stresses the contradictions that arose through the examples growth of james, towns, population, technology and trade, which at The Impact examples, a certain point burst asunder the feudal social and political forms in which production had been organized. Relations of lord to serf based on feudal rights and obligations had become a hindrance to the further development of on Family Life, these productive forces; over an extended period and after a series of political battles, they were replaced by the contractual relation of capitalists to workers. With capitalists free to pursue profits wherever they might take them and workers equally free to sell their labor power to the capitalists however they might use it, the productive potential inherent in the new forces of production, especially in technology and science, grew to unmeasured proportions. However, if maximizing profits leads to rapid growth when rapid growth results in large profits, then growth is restricted as soon as it becomes unprofitable. The periodic crises which have plagued capitalism from The Impact Essay about 1830 on are clear evidence of this.

Since that time, the new forces of the strategy-making, strategy-executing, production which have come into being in of Wal-mart Essay, capitalism, their growth and potential for producing wealth, have come increasingly into contradiction with the capitalist social relations in which production is organized. The capitalists put the factories, machines, raw materials, and labor power all of which they own into strategy-executing motion to produce goods only if they feel they can make a profit, no matter what the availability of these factors of production, and no matter what the need of of Wal-mart examples, consumers for their products. The cost to society in wealth that is From Here Essay, never produced (and in wealth which is produced but in forms that are anti-social in their character) continues to grow and with it the need for another, more efficient, more humane way of organizing production. Within this framework the examples actual course of history is determined by class struggle. Of Non Resources! According to Marx, each class is defined chiefly by its relation to Essay, the productive process and has objective interests rooted in the strategy-making,, that relation.

The capitalists' interests lie in securing their power and expanding profits. Workers, on the other hand, have interests in higher wages, safe working conditions, shorter hours, job security, and#151;because it is required to realize other interests#151;a new distribution of The Impact of Wal-mart, power. The class struggle involves everything that these two major classes do to promote their incompatible interests at each other's expense. In this battle, which rages throughout society, the Moved capitalists are aided by their wealth, their control of the state, and their domination over other institutions#151;schools, media, churches#151;that guide and distort people's thinking. On the workers' side are their sheer numbers, their experience of cooperation#151;however alienated#151;while at work, trade unions, working class political parties (where they exist), and the contradictions within capitalism that make present conditions increasingly irrational. In capitalism, the of Wal-mart state is an instrument in the hands of the capitalists that is used to repress dangerous dissent and to help expand surplus value. This is done mainly by passing and enforcing anti-working class laws and by providing the capitalists with various economic subsidies (capitalist welfare). Division Of Ancient Roman Army! Marx also views the state as a set of political structures interlocked with the economic structures of capitalism whose requirements#151;chiefly for accumulating capital (means of production used to produce value)#151;it must satisfy, if the whole system is not to go into a tailspin. And, finally, the state is an arena for class struggle where class and class factions contend for political advantage in Essay examples, an unfair fight that finds the capitalists holding all the most powerful weapons. An adequate understanding of the role of the capitalist state as a complex social relation requires that it be approached from each of division of ancient roman, these three angles: as an instrument of the capitalist class, as a structure of political offices and processes, and as an arena of class struggle. In order to supplement the institutions of force, capitalism has given rise to an ideology, or way of thinking, which gets people to accept the The Impact examples status quo or, at least, confuses them as to the possibility of on Family Life Essay, replacing it with something better.

For the most part, the ideas and concepts which make up this ideology work by getting people to focus on The Impact Essay examples the observable aspects of any event or institution, neglecting its history and potential for change as well as the broader context in roman, which it resides. The result is a collection of partial, static, distorted, onsided notions that reveal only what the capitalists would like everyone to think. For example, in capitalist ideology, consumers are considered sovereign, as if consumers actually determine what gets produced through the choices they make in of Wal-mart Essay examples, the supermarket; and no effort is made to analyze how they develop their preferences (history) or who determines the range of available choices (1arger system). Placing an event in its real historical and social context, which is to say#151;studying it dialectically, often leads (as in the case of consumer sovereignty) to conclusions that are the direct opposite of those based on the narrow observations favored by daisy henry, ideological thinking. As the attempted separation of what cannot be separated without distortion, capitalist ideology reflects in The Impact of Wal-mart Essay, thought the From fractured lives of alienated people, while at the same time making it increasingly difficult for them to grasp their alienation. As the contradictions of The Impact of Wal-mart Essay examples, capitalism become greater, more intense, and less amenable to disguise, neither the state nor ideology can restrain the mass of the workers, white and Essay blue collar, from recognizing their interests (becoming class conscious) and acting upon them. Of Wal-mart Essay! The overthrow of capitalism, when it comes, Marx believed, would proceed as quickly and democratically as the nature of capitalist opposition allowed.

Out of the revolution would emerge a socialist society which would fully utilize and develop much further the productive potential inherited from capitalism. Through democratic planning, production would now be directed to serving social needs instead of maximizing private profit. The final goal, toward which socialist society would constantly build, is the human one of abolishing alienation. Marx called the Life attainment of this goal communism. Capitalism has obviously changed a lot in the hundred years since Marx wrote. In the basic relations and structures which distinguish capitalism from feudalism and socialism, however, it has changed very little, and these are the main features of capitalism addressed in Marx's theories. Workers, for example, may earn more money now than they did in the last century, but so do the capitalists. Consequently, the wealth and income gaps between the two classes is as great or greater than ever. The workers' relations to their labor, products and capitalists (which are traced in the theory of alienation and the labor theory of value) are basically unchanged from Marx's day.

Probably the greatest difference between our capitalism and Marx's has to do with the more direct involvement of the of Wal-mart state in the capitalist economy (primarily to bolster flagging profits) and, as a consequence of this, the expanded role of ideology to From to Eternity, disguise the increasingly obvious ties between the agencies of the examples state and example renewable the capitalist class. From its beginnings, Marxism has been under attack from of Wal-mart examples all sides, but the the strategy-making, strategy-executing process major criticisms have been directed against claims that Marx never made. For example, some have mistakenly viewed Marx's materialism as evidence that he ignored the role of ideas in The Impact, history and in people's lives. Viewed as an economic determinism, Marxism has also been criticized for presenting politics, culture, religion, etc. as simple effects of a one-way economic cause. (This would be undialectical.) Viewed as a claim that labor is the only factor in From to Eternity, determining prices (equated here with value), the The Impact labor theory of value has been wrongly attacked for Moved By Literature ignoring the effect of competition on prices. The Impact Of Wal-mart Examples! And viewing what are projections of capitalism's tendencies into the future as inviolable predictions, Marx has been accused of making false predictions. Some, finally, point to the anti-democratic practices of many Communist countries and claim that authoritarianism is inherent in Marxist doctrine. In fact, Marx's theories concentrate on advanced industrial capitalism with its imperfect but still functioning democratic institutions and he never thought that socialism could achieve its full promise in relatively poor, politically underdeveloped nations. Marxism, as defined here, has had its main influence among workers and intellectuals in capitalist countries, especially in Europe, who have used it as a major tool in defining their problems and constructing political strategies. Miller! In the Western countries, even non-Marxist intellectuals, particularly sociologists and historians, have drawn considerable insights from Essay Marx's writings.

In the miller Third World, Marxism#151;considerably modified to deal with their special mixture of examples, primitive and advanced capitalist conditions#151;has clarified the nature of the enemy for strategy-executing process many liberation movements. In the The Impact Essay examples Communist countries, selected doctrines of Marx have been frozen into abstract principles to serve as the official ideology of the regimes. The influence of daisy miller, these three varieties of Marxism is as different as their content. In American capitalism's latest crisis, the The Impact of Wal-mart Essay combination of growing unemployment and worsening inflation has confounded all the usual experts. The most powerful nation in history cannot erase poverty, provide full employment, guarantee decent housing or an adequate diet or good health care to its people. Moved Essay! Meanwhile, the The Impact Essay examples rich get richer. Only Marxism, as an account ofthe rational unfolding of From, a basically irrational capitalist system, makes sense of Essay, our current chaos. In class struggle, it also points the way out.

In 1990, over 2 million cases of child abuse and neglect were reported to social service agencies. The Impact Essay! In the james period 1979 through 1988, about 2,000 child deaths (ages 0-17) were recorded annually as a result of abuse and neglect (McClain et al., 1993), and an additional 160,000 cases resulted in serious injuries in 1990 alone (Daro and McCurdy, 1991). However tragic and sensational, the counts of deaths and serious injuries provide limited insight into the pervasive long-term social, behavioral, and cognitive consequences of child abuse and neglect. The Impact Of Wal-mart Examples! Reports of The Impact Life child maltreatment alone also reveal little about the interactions among individuals, families, communities, and society that lead to such incidents. American society has not yet recognized the complex origins or the profound consequences of child victimization. The services required for children who have been abused or neglected, including medical care, family counseling, foster care, and specialized education, are expensive and are often subsidized by The Impact examples governmental funds. The General Accounting Office (1991) has estimated that these services cost more than $500 million annually. Equally disturbing, research suggests that child maltreatment cases are highly related to social problems such as juvenile delinquency, substance abuse, and violence, which require additional services and severely affect the quality of life for many American families. The Importance Of Child Maltreatment Research. The challenges of conducting research in the field of child maltreatment are enormous.

Although we understand comparatively little about the causes, definitions, treatment, and prevention of child abuse and neglect, we do know enough to recognize that the origins and consequences of child victimization are not confined to the months or years in which reported incidents actually occurred. For those who survive, the long-term consequences of child maltreatment appear to be more damaging to victims and their families, and more costly for society, than the immediate or acute injuries themselves. Yet little is invested in understanding the factors that predispose, mitigate, or prevent the behavioral and social consequences of child maltreatment. The panel has identified five key reasons why child maltreatment research should be viewed as a central nexus of more comprehensive research activity. Research on child maltreatment can provide scientific information that will help with the solution of miller henry james a broad range of individual and social disorders. Research in this field is demonstrating that experiences with child abuse and The Impact of Wal-mart neglect are a major component of many child and adult mental and behavioral disorders, including delayed development, poor academic performance, delinquency, depression, alcoholism, substance abuse, deviant sexual behaviors, and domestic and criminal violence. Many forms of child abuse and neglect are treatable and on Family Essay avoidable, and many severe consequences of child maltreatment can be diminished with proper attention and assistance.

Research on The Impact of Wal-mart child abuse and neglect provides an strategy-executing process, opportunity for of Wal-mart, society to address, and ultimately prevent, a range of individual and social disorders that impair the health and quality of Moved Essay examples life of millions of America's children as well as their families and communities. Research on child maltreatment can provide insights and The Impact knowledge that can directly benefit victims of child abuse and neglect and their families. Individuals who have been victimized as a result of child maltreatment deserve to have research efforts dedicated to their experience, in the same manner as our society invests in scientific research for burn victims, victims of genetic or infectious diseases, or those who are subjected to other forms of daisy trauma. Yet the families of child abuse and neglect victims are often not active in social and political organizations. Unable to speak for themselves or employ paid representatives to promote their interests, they have been discounted and overlooked in of Wal-mart Essay, the process of determining what social problems deserve public resources and From attention from the American research community. Research on The Impact Essay child maltreatment can reduce long-term economic costs associated with treating the consequences of child maltreatment, in areas such as mental health services, foster care, juvenile delinquency, and family violence. Economic issues must also be considered in evaluating long-term treatment costs and loss of division roman army earnings associated with the The Impact of Wal-mart examples consequences of child victimization.

One analysis cited by the General Accounting Office that used prevalence and treatment rates generated from multiple studies (Daro, 1988) calculated potential fiscal costs resulting from child abuse estimates as follows: (1) Assuming a 20 percent delinquency rate among adolescent abuse victims, requiring an miller, average of 2 years in a correctional institution, the public cost of their incarceration would be more than $14.8 million. (2) If 1 percent of The Impact Essay severely abused children suffer permanent disabilities, the of ancient annual cost of community services (estimated at $13 per day) for treating developmentally disabled children would increase by $1.1 million. (3) The future lost productivity of severely abused children is $658-1300 million annually, if their impairments limit their potential earnings by only 5-10 percent. Research on child maltreatment can provide empirical evidence to improve the quality of many legal and organizational decisions that have broad-based social implications. Government officials, judges, legislators, social service personnel, child welfare advocates, and examples others make hundreds of crucial decisions each day about the lives and futures of roman child victims and their offenders. The Impact Essay Examples! These decisions include the of non renewable selection of cases of suspected child abuse and neglect for investigation and determinations about The Impact, which children should remain with families in which abuse has occurred. Individuals making such decisions will benefit from renewable resources, informed guidance on the effectiveness and examples consequences of various social interventions that address child maltreatment. Such guidance can evolve from research on the outcomes of daisy miller alternative responses to reports of examples child abuse and neglect, results of therapeutic and social service interventions, and cost-effectiveness studies. For example, research that describes the james conditions under which family counseling and family preservation efforts are effective has tremendous implications for the importance of attachment relationships for children and the disruption of these relationships brought on by foster care. Research on the etiology of child maltreatment can provide a scientific basis for primary prevention of child abuse#151;that is, through programs that will counteract etiological factors before they have a chance to The Impact of Wal-mart, produce child abuse in the next generation. Research On Child Maltreatment Is Currently. Undervalued And Undeveloped.

Research in the field of child maltreatment studies is relatively undeveloped when compared with related fields such as child development, so- cial welfare, and criminal violence. Although no specific theory about the causes of child abuse and neglect has been substantially replicated across studies, significant progress has been gained in From, the past few decades in identifying the dimensions of The Impact Essay examples complex phenomena that contribute to the origins of From Essay child maltreatment. Efforts to improve the quality of research on any group of children are dependent on The Impact of Wal-mart the value that society assigns to renewable, the potential inherent in young lives. Although more adults are available in American society today as service providers to care for children than was the case in 1960, a disturbing number of recent reports have concluded that American children are in trouble (Fuchs and The Impact of Wal-mart Essay examples Reklis, 1992; National Commission on Children, 1991; Children's Defense Fund, 1991). Efforts to encourage greater investments in research on children will be futile unless broader structural and the strategy-making, strategy-executing social issues can be addressed within our society. Research on general problems of of Wal-mart violence, substance addiction, social inequality, unemployment, poor education, and the treatment of children in the social services system is incomplete without attention to child maltreatment issues. Research on child maltreatment can play a key role in informing major social policy decisions concerning the services that should be made available to children, especially children in families or neighborhoods that experience significant stress and violence.

As a nation, we already have developed laws and regulatory approaches to reduce and prevent childhood injuries and deaths through actions such as restricting hot water temperatures and requiring mandatory child restraints in automobiles. Example Resources! These important precedents suggest how research on The Impact of Wal-mart risk factors can provide informed guidance for social efforts to protect all of America's children in both familial and other settings. Not only has our society invested relatively little in research on children, but we also have invested even less in research on children whose families are characterized by multiple problems, such as poverty, substance abuse, violence, welfare dependency, and of Gender on Family child maltreatment. In part, this slower development is influenced by the complexities of research on major social problems. But the state of research on this topic could be advanced more rapidly with increased investment of funds. In the competition for scarce research funds, the underinvestment in child maltreatment research needs to be understood in the context of bias, prejudice, and the lack of a clear political constituency for The Impact examples, children in general and disadvantaged children in particular (Children's Defense Fund, 1991; National Commission on Children, 1991).

Factors such as racism, ethnic discrimination, sexism, class bias, institutional and professional jealousies, and social inequities influence the development of our national research agenda (Bell, 1992, Huston, 1991). The evolving research agenda has also struggled with limitations im- posed by attempting to transfer the results of division of ancient sample-specific studies to The Impact examples, diverse groups of individuals. The roles of culture, ethnic values, and example resources economic factors pervade the Essay development of parenting practices and family dynamics. In setting a research agenda for The Impact Essay, this field, ethnic diversity and Essay multiple cultural perspectives are essential to improve the quality of the research program and to daisy miller henry, overcome systematic biases that have restricted its development. Researchers must address ethical and legal issues that present unique obligations and dilemmas regarding selection of subjects, provision of services, and disclosure of data. For example, researchers who discover an undetected incident of child abuse in The Impact of Wal-mart Essay examples, the course of an Essay, interview are required by state laws to disclose the identities of the victim and offender(s), if known, to appropriate child welfare officials.

These mandatory reporting requirements, adopted in the interests of protecting children, may actually cause long-term damage to children by The Impact of Wal-mart examples restricting the scope of research studies and discouraging scientists from developing the knowledge base necessary to guide social interventions. Substantial efforts are now required to reach beyond the limitations of current knowledge and to gain new insights that can improve the quality of social service efforts and public policy decisions affecting the health and welfare of abused and neglected children and their families. Most important, collaborative long-term research ventures are necessary to diminish social, professional, and institutional prejudices that have restricted the development of a comprehensive knowledge base that can improve understanding of, and response to, child maltreatment. Dimensions Of Child Abuse And Neglect. The human dimensions of child maltreatment are enormous and tragic. The U.S. Advisory Board on Child Abuse and Neglect has called the the strategy-making, strategy-executing process problem of child maltreatment ''an epidemic in American society, one that requires a critical national emergency response. The scale and severity of child abuse and of Wal-mart Essay neglect has caused various public and private organizations to mobilize efforts to raise public awareness of individual cases and societal trends, to improve the reporting and process tracking of child maltreatment cases, to strengthen the responses of social service systems, and to The Impact of Wal-mart, develop an effective and fair system for protecting and offering services to victims while also punishing adults who deliberately harm children or place them in daisy miller, danger. Over the Essay past several decades, a growing number of state and federal funding programs, governmental reports, specialized journals, and research centers, as well as national and international societies and conferences, have examined various dimensions of the problem of example child maltreatment. The results of these efforts have been inconsistent and uneven.

In addressing aspects of each new revelation of abuse or each promising new intervention, research efforts often have become diffuse, fragmented, specific, and narrow. What is lacking is a coordinated approach and The Impact of Wal-mart a general conceptual framework that can add new depth to our understanding of child maltreatment. A coordinated approach can accommodate diverse perspectives while providing direction and guidance in establishing research priorities and the strategy-making, synthesizing research knowledge. Organizational mechanisms are also needed to facilitate the application and integration of research on child maltreatment in The Impact of Wal-mart examples, related areas such as child development, family violence, substance abuse, and juvenile delinquency. Child maltreatment is not a new problem, yet concerted service, research, and policy attention toward it is just beginning.

Although isolated studies of child maltreatment appeared in the medical and sociological literature in the first half of the twentieth century, the publication of The Battered Child Syndrome by C. On Family Essay! Henry Kempe and associates (1962) is generally considered the The Impact of Wal-mart Essay first definitive paper in the field in the United States. The efforts of Kempe and others to publicize disturbing medical experience with child abuse and neglect led to the passage of the first Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act in 1974 (P.L. 93-247). The act, which has been amended several times (most recently in 1992), established a governmental program designed to guide and consolidate national and state data collection efforts regarding reports of child abuse and neglect, conduct national surveys of household violence, and sponsor research and demonstration programs to prevent, identify, and roman treat child abuse and The Impact of Wal-mart neglect. However, the federal government's leadership role in building a research base in this area has been complicated by changes and inconsistencies in research plans and priorities, limited funding, politicized peer review, fragmentation of effort among various federal agencies, poorly scheduled proposal review deadlines, and bias introduced by competing institutional objectives. 1 The lack of comprehensive, long-term planning for a research base has resulted in daisy james, a field characterized by contradictions, conflict, and fragmentation. The role of the National Center for Child Abuse and Neglect as the lead federal agency in Essay examples, supporting research in this field has been sharply criticized (U.S. Advisory Board, 1991). Many observers believe that the federal government lacks leadership, funding, and an effective research program for studies on child maltreatment. The Complexity Of Child Maltreatment.

Child maltreatment was originally seen in the form of the battered child, often portrayed in of ancient roman army, terms of physical abuse. Today, four general categories of child maltreatment are generally recognized: (1) physical. abuse, (2) sexual abuse, (3) neglect, and (4) emotional maltreatment. Each category covers a range of behaviors, as discussed in Chapter 2. These four categories have become the focus of separate studies of Essay examples incidence and prevalence, etiology, prevention, consequences, and treatment, with uneven development of research within each area and poor integration of knowledge across areas.

Each category has developed its own typology and framework of of ancient roman army reference terms, revealing certain similarities (such as the importance of developmental perspectives in considering the consequences of maltreatment) but also important differences (such as the predatory behavior associated with some forms of sexual abuse that do not appear in the etiology of other forms of child maltreatment). In addition to the category of child maltreatment, the duration, source, intensity, timing, and of Wal-mart Essay situational context of incidents of child victimization are now recognized as important factors in studying the origin and process consequences of child maltreatment. Yet information about The Impact Essay examples, these factors is division roman army rarely requested or recorded by social agencies or health professionals in the process of identifying or documenting reports of child maltreatment. The Impact Of Wal-mart Examples! Furthermore, research is often weakened by variation in research definitions of strategy-executing process child maltreatment, bias in the recruitment of research subjects, the absence of information regarding circumstances surrounding maltreatment reports, the of Wal-mart absence of example of non resources measures to assess selected variables under study, and the absence of a developmental perspective in many research studies. The co-occurrence of The Impact different forms of The Impact on Family Essay child maltreatment has been examined only to a limited extent.

Relatively little is known about areas of similarity and differences in terms of causes, consequences, prevention, and treatment of selected types of child abuse and neglect. Inconsistencies in definitions often preclude comparative analyses of clinical studies. For example, studies of sexual abuse have indicated wide variations in its prevalence, often as a result of of Wal-mart Essay examples differences in the types of behavior that might be included in Here to Eternity, the definition adopted by each research investigator. Emotional abuse is also a matter of The Impact of Wal-mart Essay controversy in some quarters, primarily because of broad variations in its definition. Research on child maltreatment is also complicated by the fragmentation of of ancient army services and responses by which our society addresses specific reports of child maltreatment. Cases may involve children who are victims or witnesses to single or repeated incidents of child abuse and neglect.

Sadly, child maltreatment often involves various family members, relatives, or other individuals who reside in the homes or neighborhoods of the affected children. Adult figures may be perpetrators of offensive incidents or mediators in intervention or prevention efforts. The importance of the social ecological framework of the child has only recently been recognized in The Impact of Wal-mart examples, studies of maltreatment. Responses to From Here Essay, child abuse and neglect involve a variety of social institutions, including commu- nities, schools, hospitals, churches, youth associations, the media, and other social structures that provide services for children.

Such groups and organizations present special intervention opportunities to reduce the scale and scope of the problem of child maltreatment, but their activities are often poorly documented and uncoordinated. Finally, governmental offices at The Impact examples the local, state, and federal levels have legal and social obligations to daisy miller, develop programs and resources to address child maltreatment, and their role is critical in developing a research agenda for this field. In the past, the research agenda has been determined predominantly by pragmatic needs in the development and delivery of treatment and prevention services rather than by theoretical paradigms, a process that facilitates short-term studies of specialized research priorities but impedes the development of The Impact a well-organized, coherent body of From Essay scientific knowledge that can contribute over time to understanding fundamental principles and issues. As a result, the research in The Impact of Wal-mart Essay, this field has been generally viewed by the scientific community as fragmented, diffuse, decentralized, and of poor quality. The research literature in the field of child maltreatment is immense#151;over 2000 items are included in Moved By Literature examples, the panel's research bibliography, a portion of which is referenced in this report.

Despite this quantity of literature, researchers generally agree that the The Impact of Wal-mart Essay quality of research on child maltreatment is relatively weak in james, comparison to health and social science research studies in areas such as family systems and child development. Only a few prospective studies of child maltreatment have been undertaken, and most studies rely on the use of of Wal-mart clinical samples (which may exclude important segments of the research population) or adult memories. Both types of the strategy-making, strategy-executing samples are problematic and The Impact Essay can produce biased results. Clinical samples may not be representative of all cases of child maltreatment. For example, we know from epidemiologic studies of disease of cases that were derived from hospital records that, unless the phenomenon of interest always comes to a service provider for treatment, there exist undetected and untreated cases in the general population that are often quite different from those who have sought treatment. Similarly, when studies rely on adult memories of childhood experiences, recall bias is always an issue. Longitudinal studies are quite rare, and some studies that are described as longitudinal actually consist of hybrid designs followed over example renewable, time. To ensure some measure of quality, the panel relied largely on studies that had been published in the peer-reviewed scientific literature. More rigorous scientific criteria (such as the use of The Impact Essay appropriate theory and methodology in the conduct of the study) were considered by the panel, but were not adopted because little of the The Impact on Family existing work would meet such selection. criteria.

Given the early stage of development of this field of research, the panel believes that even weak studies contain some useful information, especially when they suggest clinical insights, a new perspective, or a point of Essay departure from example, commonly held assumptions. Thus, the report draws out issues based on clinical studies or studies that lack sufficient control samples, but the of Wal-mart Essay panel refrains from drawing inferences based on By Literature this literature. The panel believes that future research reviews of the child maltreatment literature would benefit from the identification of The Impact Essay examples explicit criteria that could guide the By Literature selection of exemplary research studies, such as the following: The extent to which the study is guided by theory regarding the examples origins and pathways of child abuse and neglect; The use of appropriate and example of non renewable resources replicable instrumentation (including outcome measures) in the conduct of the study; and.

The selection of appropriate study samples, including the use of experimental and control groups in etiological studies or in the analysis of outcomes of child maltreatment or intervention efforts. For the most part, only a few studies will score well in each of the above categories. It becomes problematic, therefore, to rate the value of The Impact of Wal-mart studies which may score high in one category but not in others. The panel has relied primarily on studies conducted in the past decade, since earlier research work may not meet contemporary standards of methodological rigor. However, citations to earlier studies are included in this report where they are thought to be particularly useful and when research investigators provided careful assessments and the strategy-making, strategy-executing analysis of issues such as definition, interrelationships of various types of abuse, and the social context of child maltreatment. A Comparison With Other Fields of Family and Child Research. A comparison with the field of of Wal-mart Essay studies on family functioning may illustrate another point about the status of the studies on child maltreatment. The literature on normal family functioning or socialization effects differs in many respects from the literature on child abuse and neglect. Essay! Family sociology research has a coherent body of literature and reasonable consensus about what constitutes high-quality parenting in middle-class, predominantly White populations.

Family functioning studies have focused predominantly on large, nonclinical populations, exploring styles of parenting and parenting practices that generate different kinds and The Impact levels of competence, mental health, and character in children. Moved By Literature Essay Examples! Studies of family functioning have tended to follow cohorts of subjects over long periods to identify the effects of variations in The Impact of Wal-mart Essay examples, childrearing practices and patterns on Moved Essay children's. competence and adjustment that are not a function of social class and circumstances. By contrast, the vast and burgeoning literature on child abuse and neglect is The Impact of Wal-mart examples applied research concerned largely with the adverse effects of personal and social pathology on children. The research is often derived from very small samples selected by clinicians and case workers. Research is generally cross-sectional, and Essay almost without exception the samples use impoverished families characterized by multiple problems, including substance abuse, unemployment, transient housing, and so forth. Until recently, researchers demonstrated little regard for incorporating appropriate ethnic and cultural variables in The Impact examples, comparison and of ancient roman army control groups. In the past decade, significant improvements have occurred in the development of child maltreatment research, but key problems remain in the area of definitions, study designs, and the use of instrumentation. As the The Impact of Wal-mart nature of research on renewable resources child abuse and neglect has evolved over time, scientists and of Wal-mart Essay practitioners have likewise changed. Example! The psychopathologic model of child maltreatment has been expanded to include models that stress the The Impact of Wal-mart examples interactions of individual, family, neighborhood, and on Family Life Essay larger social systems.

The role of ethnic and cultural issues are acquiring an emerging importance in formulating parent-child and family-community relationships. Earlier simplistic conceptionalizations of perpetrator-victim relationships are evolving into multiple-focus research projects that examine antecedents in family histories, current situational relationships, ecological and neighborhood issues, and The Impact interactional qualities of relationships between parent-child and offender-victim. Strategy-executing! In addition, emphases in treatment, social service, and legal programs combine aspects of both law enforcement and therapy, reflecting an international trend away from punishment, toward assistance, for families in trouble. The commissioner of the examples Administration for Children, Youth, and Families in example of non renewable resources, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services requested that the National Academy of The Impact of Wal-mart Essay Sciences convene a study panel to undertake a comprehensive examination of the theoretical and pragmatic research needs in the area of child maltreatment. The Panel on Research on Child Abuse and the strategy-making, Neglect was asked specifically to: Review and assess research on child abuse and neglect, encompassing work funded by the Administration for Children, Youth, and Families and other known sources under public and private auspices; Identify research that provides knowledge relevant to Essay, the field; and. Recommend research priorities for the next decade, including new. areas of research that should be funded by public and private agencies and suggestions regarding fields that are no longer a priority for funding.

The report resulting from this study provides recommendations for allocating existing research funds and also suggests funding mechanisms and topic areas to the strategy-making, strategy-executing, which new resources could be allocated or enhanced resources could be redirected. The Impact Examples! By focusing this report on research priorities and the needs of the research community, the panel's efforts were distinguished from related activities, such as the reports of the U.S. Advisory Board on Child Abuse and Neglect, which concentrate on the policy issues in the field of child maltreatment. The request for recommendations for research priorities recognizes that existing studies on child maltreatment require careful evaluation to improve the Moved Essay examples evolution of the field and to build appropriate levels of human and financial resources for these complex research problems. Through this review, the panel has examined the strengths and The Impact of Wal-mart weaknesses of past research and identified areas of knowledge that represent the greatest promise for Life Essay, advancing understanding of, and dealing more effectively with, the Essay examples problem of child maltreatment.

In conducting this review, the panel has recognized the special status of studies of child maltreatment. The experience of child abuse or neglect from division of ancient, any perspective, including victim, perpetrator, professional, or witness, elicits strong emotions that may distort the design, interpretation, or support of empirical studies. The role of the media in dramatizing selected cases of child maltreatment has increased public awareness, but it has also produced a climate in which scientific objectivity may be sacrificed in the name of urgency or humane service. Many concerned citizens, legislators, child advocates, and others think we already know enough to Essay examples, address the root causes of child maltreatment. Critical evaluations of treatment and prevention services are not supported due to both a lack of funding and a lack of The Impact of Gender on Family Essay appreciation for the role that scientific analysis can play in improving the quality of existing services and The Impact of Wal-mart Essay examples identifying new opportunities for interventions. The existing research base is small in volume and spread over a wide variety of topics. The contrast between the importance of the problem and the difficulty of approaching it has encouraged the panel to proceed carefully, thoroughly distinguishing suppositions from example of non renewable, facts when they appear. Research on child maltreatment is at a crossroads#151;we are now in a position to merge this research field with others to of Wal-mart Essay, incorporate multiple perspectives, broaden research samples, and focus on fundamental issues that have the potential to strengthen, reform, or replace existing public policy and social programs. We have arrived at a point where we can. recognize the complex interplay of forces in the origins and consequences of child abuse and neglect. We also recognize the limitations of our knowledge about the effects of different forms of social interventions (e.g., home visitations, foster care, family treatment programs) for changing the developmental pathways of abuse victims and their families.

The Importance Of A Child-Oriented Framework. The field of child maltreatment studies has often divided research into the types of child maltreatment under consideration (such as physical and sexual abuse, child neglect, and resources emotional maltreatment). Within each category, researchers and practitioners have examined underlying causes or etiology, consequences, forms of treatment or other interventions, and prevention programs. Each category has developed its own typology and framework of reference terms, and researchers within each category often publish in separate journals and of Wal-mart Essay examples attend separate professional meetings. Over a decade ago, the National Research Council Committee on Child Development Research and From Public Policy published a report titled Services for of Wal-mart, Children: An Agenda for division army, Research (1981). Commenting on the development of various government services for children, the report noted that observations of children's needs were increasingly distorted by the unmanageably complex, expensive, and confusing categorical service structure that had produced fragmented and sometimes contradictory programs to address child health and nutrition requirements (p. 15-16). The committee concluded that the actual experiences of children and their families in different segments of society and the conditions of their homes, neighborhoods, and communities needed more systematic study. The report further noted that we need to examples, learn more about who are the important people in children's lives, including parents, siblings, extended family, friends, and caretakers outside the family, and what these people do for children, when, and where.

These same conclusions can be applied to studies of child maltreatment. Our panel considered, but did not endorse, a framework that would emphasize differences in the categories of child abuse or neglect. We also considered a framework that would highlight differences in the current system of detecting, investigating, or responding to child maltreatment. In contrast to conceptualizing this report in terms of categories of maltreatment or responses of the social system to child maltreatment, the panel presents a child-oriented research agenda that emphasizes the importance of knowing more about the From Here to Eternity Essay backgrounds and experiences of developing children and their families, within a broader social context that includes their friends, neighborhoods, and The Impact examples communities. From To Eternity! This framework stresses the importance of knowing more about the qualitative differences between children who suffer episodic experiences of abuse or neglect and those for The Impact of Wal-mart, whom mal- treatment is a chronic part of their lives. And this approach highlights the need to know more about circumstances that affect the consequences, and therefore the treatment, of child maltreatment, especially circumstances that may be affected by family, cultural, or ethnic factors that often remain hidden in small, isolated studies.

An Ecological Developmental Perspective. The panel has adopted an ecological developmental perspective to examine factors in the child, family, or society that can exacerbate or mitigate the incidence and destructive consequences of child maltreatment. In the panel's view, this perspective reflects the understanding that development is a process involving transactions between the growing child and the social environment or ecology in which development takes place. Positive and negative factors merit attention in the strategy-making, strategy-executing process, shaping a research agenda on child maltreatment. We have adopted a perspective that recognizes that dysfunctional families are often part of a dysfunctional environment. The relevance of child maltreatment research to child development studies and other research fields is only now being examined.

New methodologies and examples new theories of child maltreatment that incorporate a developmental perspective can provide opportunities for researchers to consider the process interaction of multiple factors, rather than focusing on single causes or short-term effects. What is required is the mobilization of of Wal-mart Essay new structures of support and resources to the strategy-making, strategy-executing, concentrate research efforts on significant areas that offer the of Wal-mart greatest promise of improving our understanding of, and our responses to, child abuse and neglect. Our report extends beyond what is, to what could be, in a society that fosters healthy development in example of non, children and families. We cannot simply build a research agenda for the existing social system; we need to develop one that independently challenges the The Impact of Wal-mart Essay examples system to adapt to new perspectives, new insights, and new discoveries. The fundamental theme of the report is the recognition that research efforts to address child maltreatment should be enhanced and incorporated into a long-term plan to improve the quality of children's lives and henry james the lives of their families. Of Wal-mart Essay! By placing maltreatment within the framework of healthy development, for example, we can identify unique sources of intervention for infants, preschool children, school-age children, and adolescents. Each stage of development presents challenges that must be resolved in order for a child to achieve productive forms of thinking, perceiving, and Here to Eternity Essay behaving as an Essay, adult. Here! The special needs of a newborn infant significantly differ from those of a toddler or preschool child.

Children in the early years of elementary school have different skills and distinct experiential levels from those of preadolescent years. Adolescent boys and girls demon- strate a range of Essay awkward and exploratory behaviors as they acquire basic social skills necessary to move forward into adult life. Roman! Most important, developmental research has identified the significant influences of family, schools, peers, neighborhoods, and the broader society in The Impact examples, supporting or constricting child development. Understanding the phenomenon of child abuse and neglect within a developmental perspective poses special challenges. As noted earlier, research literature on child abuse and neglect is division of ancient roman generally organized by the category or type of of Wal-mart Essay examples maltreatment; integrated efforts have not yet been achieved. For example, research has not yet compared and daisy henry contrasted the causes of physical and of Wal-mart Essay examples sexual abuse of a preschool child or the differences between emotional maltreatment of toddlers and adolescents, although all these examples fall within the Moved By Literature Essay domain of child maltreatment. A broader conceptual framework for research will elicit data that can facilitate such comparative analyses. By placing research in The Impact of Wal-mart Essay, the framework of factors that foster healthy development, the ecological developmental perspective can enhance understanding of the research agenda for child abuse and neglect.

The developmental perspective can improve the quality of treatment and prevention programs, which often focus on particular groups, such as young mothers who demonstrate risk factors for abuse of newborns, or sexual offenders who molest children. There has been little effort to cut across the categorical lines established within these studies to understand points of convergence or divergence in studies on child abuse and strategy-executing neglect. The ecological developmental perspective can also improve our understanding of the consequences of child abuse and neglect, which may occur with increased or diminished intensity over of Wal-mart, a developmental cycle, or in different settings such as the family or the daisy miller henry school. Initial effects may be easily identified and addressed if the abuse is detected early in the child's development, and medical and psychological services are available for The Impact of Wal-mart Essay examples, the victim and the family. Undetected incidents, or childhood experiences discovered later in From Essay, adult life, require different forms of treatment and intervention. In many cases, incidents of abuse and neglect may go undetected and unreported, yet the child victim may display aggression, delinquency, substance addiction, or other problem behaviors that stimulate responses within the social system. Finally, an ecological developmental perspective can enhance intervention and prevention programs by identifying different requirements and potential effects for different age groups.

Children at separate stages of their developmental cycle have special coping mechanisms that present barriers to#151;and opportunities for#151;the treatment and prevention of child abuse and The Impact of Wal-mart Essay examples neglect. Intervention programs need to Moved Essay, consider the extent to which children may have already experienced some form of maltreatment in order to. evaluate successful outcomes. In addition, the perspective facilitates evaluation of which settings are the The Impact of Wal-mart examples most promising locus for interventions. A series of national reports associated with the health and welfare of children have been published in the past decade, many of which have identified the issue of child abuse and the strategy-making, process neglect as one that deserves sustained attention and creative programmatic solutions. In their 1991 report, Beyond Rhetoric , the National Commission on Children noted that the fragmentation of social services has resulted in the nation's children being served on The Impact of Wal-mart Essay the basis of their most obvious condition or problem rather than being served on division roman the basis of multiple needs. Although the needs of these children are often the same and are often broader than the The Impact examples mission of any single agency emotionally disturbed children are often served by Moved the mental health system, delinquent children by the juvenile justice system, and abused or neglected children by The Impact the protective services system (National Commission on Life Children, 1991). In their report, the commission called for the protection of abused and neglected children through more comprehensive child protective services, with a strong emphasis on efforts to keep children with their families or to provide permanent placement for those removed from Essay examples, their homes. In setting health goals for the year 2000, the Public Health Service recognized the problem of child maltreatment and recommended improvements in reporting and diagnostic services, and prevention and to Eternity educational interventions (U.S.

Public Health Service, 1990). For example, the report, Health People 2000 , described the four types of child maltreatment and recommended that the rising incidence (identified as 25.2 per 1,000 in of Wal-mart, 1986) should be reversed to less than 25.2 in the year 2000. These public health targets are stated as reversing increasing trends rather than achieving specific reductions because of difficulties in obtaining valid and of non renewable reliable measures of The Impact Essay child maltreatment. The report also included recommendations to expand the implementation of state level review systems for unexplained child deaths, and to increase the number of states in which at least 50 percent of children who are victims of james physical or sexual abuse receive appropriate treatment and follow-up evaluations as a means of breaking the intergenerational cycle of abuse. The U.S.

Advisory Board on Child Abuse and Neglect issued reports in 1990 and 1991 which include national policy and research recommendations. The 1991 report presented a range of research options for action, highlighting the following priorities (U.S. Advisory Board on Child Abuse and Neglect, 1991:110-113): To increase general knowledge about the causes, precipitants, consequences, prevention, and treatment of child abuse and neglect; To increase knowledge about the child protection system; To increase specific knowledge about the social and cultural factors related to child maltreatment; To increase human resources in The Impact of Wal-mart examples, the field of research on child abuse and neglect; To ensure that procedures for stimulation and analysis of research on child abuse and neglect are scientifically credible;

To facilitate the planning of research; and. To reduce obstacles to the generation of From Here Essay knowledge about The Impact Essay examples, child abuse and neglect. This report differs from those described above because its primary focus is on establishing a research agenda for the field of studies on child abuse and neglect. Example Renewable Resources! In contrast to of Wal-mart examples, the mandate of the U.S. Advisory Board on Child Abuse and Neglect, the panel was not asked to prepare policy recommendations for federal and state governments in developing child maltreatment legislation and programs. The panel is clearly aware of the need for daisy miller james, services for abused and neglected children and of the difficult policy issues that must be considered by the Congress, the federal government, the states, and municipal governments in responding to the distress of children and families in crisis. The charge to this panel was to design a research agenda that would foster the development of scientific knowledge that would provide fundamental insights into the causes, identification, incidence, consequences, treatment, and prevention of child maltreatment. This knowledge can enable public and private officials to execute their responsibilities more effectively, more equitably, and more compassionately and empower families and communities to resolve their problems and conflicts in The Impact of Wal-mart Essay examples, a manner that strengthens their internal resources and of Gender Life reduces the need for of Wal-mart Essay, external interventions. Early studies on child abuse and neglect evolved from a medical or pathogenic model, and daisy miller james research focused on specific contributing factors or causal sources within the Essay examples individual offender to be discovered, addressed, and prevented. Essay! With the development of research on child maltreatment over the past several decades, however, the complexity of the phenomena encompassed by the terms child abuse and neglect or child maltreatment has become apparent.

Clinical studies that began with small sample sizes and weak methodological designs have gradually evolved into larger and longer-term projects with hundreds of research subjects and sound instrumentation. Although the pathogenic model remains popular among the of Wal-mart Essay general public in explaining the Essay sources of child maltreatment, it is The Impact limited by its primary focus on risk and protective factors within the individual. Research investigators now recognize that individual behaviors are often influenced by factors in of ancient, the family, community, and society as a whole. The Impact Of Wal-mart Essay Examples! Elements from these systems are now being integrated into more complex theories that analyze the roles of interacting risk and protective factors to explain and understand the phenomena associated with child maltreatment. In the past, research on child abuse and neglect has developed within a categorical framework that classifies the research by the type of maltreatment typically as reported in administrative records. Although the quality of research within different categories of child abuse and neglect is uneven and problems of definitions, data collection, and renewable resources study design continue to characterize much research in this field, the panel concluded that enough progress has been achieved to integrate the four categories of examples maltreatment into a child-oriented framework that could analyze the similarities and differences of research findings. Rather than encouraging the continuation of a categorical approach that would separate research on physical or sexual abuse, for By Literature Essay, example, the panel sought to develop for research sponsors and the research community a set of priorities that would foster the integration of scientific findings, encourage the development of comparative analyses, and also distinguish key research themes in such areas as identification, incidence, etiology, prevention, consequences, and treatment. The Impact Of Wal-mart Essay! This approach recognizes the Essay need for the construction of collaborative, long-term efforts between public and private research sponsors and research investigators to strengthen the knowledge base, to of Wal-mart Essay, integrate studies that have evolved for different types of daisy henry james child maltreatment, and The Impact examples eventually to reduce the problem of child maltreatment. This approach also highlights the Essay examples connections that need to be made between research on the causes and the prevention of child maltreatment, for the more we learn about the origins of child abuse and neglect, the more effective we can be in seeking to prevent it. In the same manner, the report emphasises the connections that need to be made between research on the consequences and treatment of child maltreatment, for knowledge about the effects of child abuse and neglect can guide the development of interventions to address these effects. In constructing this report, the panel has considered eight broad areas:

Identification and definitions of child abuse and neglect (Chapter 2) Incidence: The scope of the problem (Chapter 3) Etiology of child maltreatment (Chapter 4) Prevention of child maltreatment (Chapter 5) Consequences of child maltreatment (Chapter 6) Treatment of child maltreatment (Chapter 7) Human resources, instrumentation, and research infrastructure (Chapter 8) Ethical and The Impact Essay legal issue in child maltreatment research (Chapter 9) Each chapter includes key research recommendations within the topic under review. The final chapter of the report (Chapter 10) establishes a framework of research priorities derived by the panel from these recommendations.

The four main categories identified within this framework#151;research on the nature and scope of child maltreatment; research on the origins and consequences of child maltreatment; research on the strengths and limitations of existing interventions; and the need for a science policy for child maltreatment research#151;provide the priorities that the panel has selected as the Moved By Literature Essay examples most important to address in the decade ahead. 1. Of Wal-mart! The panel received an anecdotal report, for example, that one federal research agency systematically changed titles of its research awards over a decade ago, replacing phrases such as child abuse with references to maternal and child health care, after political sensitivities developed regarding the appropriateness of its research program in this area. 1992 Faces at The Impact on Family Essay the Bottom of the Well: The Permanence of Essay examples Racism . 3 tricks to help kids learn to hold their pencil correctly. Pencil grip is one of those things that is really hard to examples, re-teach if kids initially learn it incorrectly. Though every child will end up settling on a pencil grip that works best for him or her, introducing the standard #8220;tripod#8221; grasp (pinching with thumb and index finger while resting on middle finger) is a good place to start. However, this can seem virtually impossible when you#8217;re dealing with five- and six-year-olds who don#8217;t even know their left from right, let alone how to divide up their fingers into Moved By Literature Essay different positions. Given the tricky nature of pencil holding #8212; and Essay examples its impact on kids#8217; handwriting skills #8212; I thought I#8217;d share a few OT-based tricks so you can help kids learn how to hold their pencil correctly. Trick #1: Use shorter pencils. A shorter pencil means less space for cramming in unnecessary fingers. It basically forces kids to pinch with thumb and Moved By Literature Essay examples index finger.

This is why the The Impact popular curriculum Handwriting Without Tears uses their own brand of short pencils, however, golf pencils work just fine, too. It#8217;s also why occupational therapists often have kids use crayons that have been broken in half if they are having trouble using an age-appropriate grasp. Click here to read more about why kids should use shorter crayons. Trick #2: Teach them the #8220;pinch and flip#8221;. If shorter pencils don#8217;t do the the strategy-making, strategy-executing trick for your little writer, then teach them the #8220;pinch and flip#8221;.

Simply have them pinch the sharpened end of the The Impact Essay pencil and example of non then flip it around until it gently rests in the #8220;webspace#8221; (that soft skin between your thumb and index finger) in the ready position. Watch the Essay examples video below for strategy-executing process, a less-than-one-minute demonstration and explanation of this trick. Trick #3: Have them hide something under their last two fingers. If shorter pencils and examples the #8220;pinch and flip#8221; don#8217;t work, then try having students hide something under their pinky and ring fingers. These two fingers are supposed to bend toward the palm while the division of ancient thumb, index, and middle fingers do all the The Impact of Wal-mart Essay examples work. However, sometimes kids have a hard time with this because they can#8217;t yet #8220;separate#8221; the example of non renewable two sides of their hand (the pinky side and the thumb side).

This trick will take care of that. It really doesn#8217;t matter what they hide under their last two fingers, as long as they can comfortably do so without their fingers bulging out from their hand because the item is too big, or having to squeeze too tightly because it#8217;s too small. Try using a small ball of playdough, cotton ball, marble, bead, crumpled piece of tissue paper, or tiny rubbery toy. Remember that, in addition to teaching kids #8220;tricks#8221; for The Impact of Wal-mart Essay, holding their pencil correctly, they also need strong muscles in their hands, shoulders, and even in their core muscles to of non renewable, be able to sit up and The Impact Essay write with control. Thank you! This was so very helpful. I notice there#8217;s no discussion on adding pencil grips to a pencil for kids who are having difficulties writing. Can you talk a little about pencil grips? Here#8217;s a link to a post written by a fellow OT that discusses the pros and Essay cons of using pencil grips: http://therapyfunzone.net/blog/pencil-gripspros-and-cons/ My son is 10 yrs old he hold the pencil at the bottom of the lead.all teachers commented his writing is messy some unable to read. What can I do?

Desperatelying need help..do u have any video to help in this? Tq so much. Try this awesome website and blog all about handwriting: http://www.handwritingwithkatherine.com/ Christine Calabrese says. My son#8217;s teacher said we should use the the strategy-making, strategy-executing triangular pencils/crayons (my son is The Impact of Wal-mart Essay examples 3.8 years). Do you agree or should we try the broken crayons?

He gets frustrated because he said he doesn#8217;t know how to hold crayons. Triangular crayons are great too. So are #8220;crayon rocks#8221; which you can find with a Google search. Angie Talamantes says. The Strategy-making, Process! I forget where I learned this, but I have the child pretend the fingers and thin are riding in The Impact Essay, a van. The thumb and index are the daisy miller james adults or mom and dad, and the other fingers are the kids.

The adults sit in the front, and of Wal-mart Essay the kids sit in the back. Mom and of Gender dad sit right next to each other and can kiss, but dad doesn#8217;t sit on mom#8217;s lap (as in thumb wrap). Kid#8217;s mostly really like like this, and respond well to it, and show good carry over. I have a question about this. I have always held my pencil with four fingers. They tried to of Wal-mart examples, teach me how to Here to Eternity Essay, do the of Wal-mart correct hold in school, but it never worked for me and I assumed that it was because I am left-handed and I am pushing the miller james pencil instead of The Impact of Wal-mart examples pulling it. Is it bad that I hold pencils/pens incorrectly? Is it harder to do for leftys? Sierra, if your grasp is working for you and you do not experience pain or fatigue, then it is not #8220;wrong#8221;!

I love your blog such helpful stuff! What about a child who hooks her wrist so that it is flexed when writing? Would writing on a slanted surface help? Should this position attempted to be changed because she may fatigue more easily if she continues to of ancient roman army, write in this position? Or are there other reasons? Please refer me to any posts you may have done on of Wal-mart Essay this! Thanks so much! Thank you so much for your kind words. Yes, writing on a slanted or vertical surface can place the wrist in a naturally extended position and can help with wrist hooking. How is her pencil grasp and is it just the hooking that is the Moved problem?

Thank you for your response! Her grasp seems to be ok#8230;only wrist hooking. But additionally, her handwriting is very illegible she displays poor control and inconsistent/inefficient formation of of Wal-mart Essay examples letters. So would wrist position be a priority to of Gender Life, improve in The Impact, your opinion? A really helpful piece.

I shared it on my blog Smart Owls as this is a subject that many parents ask about. Renewable Resources! Thank you so much. Do you have any articles you could direct me to that talk about efficient writing? (I#8217;d take books, too, but articles would be more ideal.) I#8217;m probably going to talk to of Wal-mart examples, the curriculum person in our school district about why I think we should include how to hold a pencil in example of non renewable resources, kindergarten and need articles for of Wal-mart Essay examples, back up. I would check the educational standards for Kindergarten first to see what is the strategy-making, strategy-executing process mentioned about expectations for Kindergarteners #038; pencil grasp by the end of the Kindergarten year. Of Wal-mart! If it#8217;s mentioned in roman, the standards, then that should be all you need. Of Wal-mart Examples! A way that taught me how to hold a pencil correctly as a child is i used these little rubber molds that slip onto your pens and pencils that were shaped to the form of holding your pencil so it in a way forced you to hold it properly and after writing like that for awhile i naturally held them in that manner.

Great post! My son#8217;s OT recommended something called a Handi Writer and of Gender Life it has helped tremendously. The Impact Examples! Thank you for this, I will be trying these with my (almost) 4 year old son. However, he doesn#8217;t put much pressure on division roman army the paper while writing so he gets frustrated because it doesn#8217;t look correct. When I help him I talk him through what needs to happen and help his hand put more pressure on of Wal-mart examples the paper while he performs the movements. But I#8217;m not sure if I#8217;m hurting or helping him. He still goes back and forth between hands when doing anything so I#8217;m not sure if that is part of the reason? And it#8217;s the same whether he is writing on a table or vertically against a wall or easel. The utensil (crayon, pencil, dry erase marker, etc) doesn#8217;t seem to strategy-executing process, make a different either.

He also has a difficult time with using scissors still, always wanting to keep his thumb down. Huh#8230;all this is interesting, especially your replies. Of Wal-mart! I was told that I hold my pencil incorrectly because it rests on henry my middle finger and creates an indent there. I was told that the pencil is instead supposed to be pinched between the of Wal-mart examples thumb and the middle/fore fingers. I have never been able to successfully do that. Perhaps the problem with my tripod grip is The Impact Life Essay just that I hold too tight then? This is helpful for teaching my daughter though because she naturally does tripod and I kept trying to Essay examples, get her to pinch it like I was told to do. These are great! My kids seem to be doing alright but I know a lot of moms that have questions.

I#8217;m definitely going to daisy james, send them this link! Do you have an article or link to talk about of Wal-mart Essay why proper grip is so important? I hold my pen the on Family Life Essay #8220;wrong#8221; way and I remember growing up my mom would try to change my grip. Of Wal-mart Essay Examples! I#8217;ve never understood why it matters. Amber, that is such a great and important question. I also hold my pencil the #8220;wrong#8221; way and of Gender on Family actually have vivid memories of my Kindergarten teacher walking over to my table, changing my grip, and of Wal-mart Essay walking away#8230;then I switched it back because I liked it better! So here#8217;s the deal: we want kids to be able to find a pencil grip that is not only Moved examples, comfortable, but EFFICIENT. The traditional tripod (thumb and finger pinching pencil while middle finger supports it) is often a very efficient grasp.

It allows people to Essay examples, write while using an appropriate amount of pressure (being able to generate enough strength to the strategy-making, process, press down on the paper, but not having to press so hard that they rip the paper or fatigue quickly) and of Wal-mart Essay it also allows them to write without quickly fatiguing. An #8220;inefficient#8221; grip will cause your hand to Essay examples, cramp up and Essay your hand muscles to get really tired, so you#8217;ll constantly have to be taking breaks and renewable resources shaking out your hand more frequently than if you held the pencil with a more efficient grasp. Since kids are required to do so much writing in school, it#8217;s important that they develop an efficient and functional grasp from an early age because it#8217;s really difficult to change it once they#8217;re used to it (I#8217;m a perfect example). For most people, they find a pencil grasp that works for them and that#8217;s the end of examples it. But for division roman army, some kids, the of Wal-mart examples grasp they#8217;re using doesn#8217;t work for them and army they end up really struggling in examples, school because of it (they write much slower, their hand fatigues very quickly, etc.). That#8217;s when the of ancient army grasp is important. Though we are NOT handwriting teachers, OTs can work with kids to address the underlying issues related to their handwriting difficulties, and sometimes grasp and fine motor strength are the culprits (though sometimes it#8217;s other things). I#8217;m totally with you: there is no #8220;one way#8221; to hold a pencil and, trust me, I have seen some funky pencil grasps that totally work for people. But it#8217;s all about function, and we want to start kids off on the right foot so they are setting themselves up for handwriting and school success, rather than forming habits that will be really, really hard to break. Hope this helps!

That totally makes sense. I#8217;ve also noticed that I don#8217;t have particularly neat writing, so I#8217;ve wondered if that was another reason for the traditional tripod grasp (I use my middle two fingers, pressing the pen against my palm, which probably doesn#8217;t give me as much control). So interesting. I will also be teaching my boys #8220;proper#8221; grasp because as you said it is nearly impossible to switch once the habit is formed. I think you and I have a similar grasp. I#8217;ve stuck with mine because I like the Essay examples way my writing looks when I use it, but I am a fairly slow writer compared to others and my hand gets tired pretty quickly, so if I have to write fast or I have a lot to write (like during an essay test), I usually switch to tripod. The Strategy-making, Strategy-executing Process! And I also make sure to demonstrate tripod when I#8217;m working with kids, too. Best of luck with your boys! these are great! thanks! You#8217;re welcome, I hope they help. Great!

There are great crayons that are similar to what you#8217;re talking about. They#8217;re called #8220;rock crayons#8221; and basically look like little pebbles. Many OT clinics have them and you can easily find them online. Here is one link to The Impact, help you find them on Amazon: http://tinyurl.com/9e9f3ad. I started my daughter out Moved By Literature examples, using homemade crayons that are flat-like the heart crayons you see around Valentine#8217;s Day.

Works on the same principle as the short pencils-there is examples no other way to hold them except for the trippod grasp. tiny pieces of crayon you can only hold the The Impact on Family Life Essay right way! Doing fun stuff the The Impact of Wal-mart examples right way like beading fine art. We call the Moved By Literature examples correct grip the #8216;three pinching crab#8217; to The Impact of Wal-mart Essay examples, make it really fun #128521; Yes, we LOVE tiny pieces of miller henry james crayon!#8230;and chalk, and eraser, and Essay sponge, and tissue paper. This list goes on. And what a cute name. I also tell my daughter to #8220;pinch it like a crab#8221; and Moved Essay when she#8217;s hooking her index finger over the pencil (which she always wants to The Impact Essay examples, do) I tell her that#8217;s not a crab, that#8217;s a seahorse (because he wraps his tail around the seaweed). I often wonder if it was #8216;better#8217; for By Literature Essay examples, teaching grip when Kindergarten age student used the big thick crayons ? What do you think ? Good question. Though it was long thought that fat crayons were ideal for little developing hands so that they could hold them more easily and develop skill, we (as in, the therapy and The Impact of Wal-mart examples teaching community) are actually finding that fat crayons do just the opposite#8230;they don#8217;t challenge kids#8217; tiny hand muscles, so they aren#8217;t able to develop the strength they need in order isolate those finger and hand muscles to make precise movements needed in pre-writing and writing activities. Here To Eternity! Think about it: how much hand skill could you develop if you as an The Impact of Wal-mart examples, adult were coloring or writing with a crayon that was as fat as, say, a paper towel roll? (proportionally speaking #128578; ) I actually wrote a post about Moved By Literature this when I first started the blog. You can check it out The Impact Essay examples, here: http://mamaot.com/2012/04/22/dont-throw-out-your-broken-crayons/ What about on Family lefties? I have a nephew who is left handed and his mama doesn#8217;t quite know how to The Impact examples, help him.

Good question. I have worked with lefties and, though every child is different, lefties are capable of using a nice tripod grasp just like righties. Some kids benefit from Moved Essay examples, adding another finger on top of the pencil to stabilize in The Impact of Wal-mart, a #8220;quadrupod#8221; position. Also, if you rotate the paper so the left corner points up, it will make it easier to write so he doesn#8217;t feel like he has to write with extreme wrist flexion or by daisy miller raising his hand off the paper. The opposite is true for righties: rotate the examples paper so the Here to Eternity Essay right corner is pointing up, which most kids do naturally anyway. One last thing: pencil smears less than pen, so pencils make for Essay examples, more legible work for lefties who will naturally drag their hand over their writing. Hope that helps! adria janni says. Thank you for of Gender on Family Essay, the lefties suggestions. The Impact Essay Examples! I currently have two 3.5 year olds in my daycare. Here Essay! One is right-handed the other left.

In early September neither could hold pencil correctly and their control of writing/movement was all over the place. I had read your tips about a year ago and always remembered them. Didn#8217;t have to use your tips until this September. Let me just say they worked. Now only 6 weeks later both have a much better grasp and loads more control. They are learning to write their names and are quite legible. I draw a tiny #8220;magic#8221; dot on The Impact of Wal-mart examples their middle finger where the Essay pencil should rest and of Wal-mart examples they have to hide the dot with the pencil.

Helps keep that finger under rather than on The Impact of Gender Life Essay top. Oh, these are so good! I will post them and pin them! The only of Wal-mart Essay, one I would add or would love your tip as well is that many young children try to write while their hand/arm is of non renewable resources suspended above the paper. My tip is offering the idea that #8220;your hand is examples kind of on vacation when you are drawing/writing so you can just let your hand relax right on the paper!#8221; Cheers. What a cute way to example of non renewable, explain it.

That attempt at writing with hand/arm suspended above the paper is actually a developmentally appropriate strategy for little ones (like toddlers) while they are still working on developing strength and control in their wrists and fingers. But kids should start using their wrists more as they progress through preschool and of Wal-mart Essay Kindergarten in order to have a #8220;dynamic#8221; grasp. One easy suggestion for helping to develop this dynamic wrist movement while grasping the crayon is to have them engage with vertical surfaces such as coloring on easels, the sides of renewable cardboard boxes (could draw a pretend house), using bath tub crayons on the wall during bath time, etc. Essay!
